Apparel Cutting Room Management

Different Stages of Pattern or Marker Making

Garments / Apparel Cutting Room

The Cutting department is one of the most essential sections for garments manufacturing in the apparel industry. The fabric cutting is started after completing the fabric spreading. In the cutting section, fabrics are cut according to the pattern. Perfect fabric cutting depends on the method of cutting and marker planning. For making quality garments they have to follow a working procedure of the cutting department to continue their work.

Different Stages of Pattern or Marker Making

  1. Patterns of different garment parts are made on pattern paper and cut into pattern pieces.
  2. For manual markers, these pattern pieces are used for marker making.
  3. On the other hand in CAD system patterns are made in the computer. Later using a plotter markers are made on a sheet.
  4. The cutting department gets a job sheet from the planning department or merchandiser or production manager.
  5. According to the size and color ratio cutting team prepare one marker or multiple markers.
  6. Marker length and a number of layers to be cut are planned in this stage.
  7. The fabric requirement for an order is calculated according to the average consumption of the fabric from the marker. In the case of multiple color order, the color-wise requirement is made.
  8. Fabric relaxation is done on knit fabric. During rolling of fabric it gets stretched. To relax the fabric roll is opened and spread and kept for about 24 hours.
  9. Fabric is layered up to a certain height to avoid cutting quality problems.
  10. Spreading is done by manual layering or an automatic layering machine can be used. [ads2]
  11. During layering of the fabric, the fabric edge is aligned at one side.
  12. A gathering process of all patterns.
  13. Pre-made paper patterns are placed on the top layer of the lay.
  14. It may be of two types:
    1. a) manual
    2. b) computerized
  15. Lay is cut following the marked lines on the top of the lay.
  16. In the cutting process, garment components are separated.
  17. On the basis of pattern shape, different cutting methods/machines are selected.
  18. Separated garment components are numbered to ensure that in stitching all components from the same layer are stitched together.
  19. The sorter sorts the patterns according to size and design and makes bundles of them.
  20. As per the production line requires a certain number of pieces with all components are tied together. This process is known as bundling.
